Buffing Rules

Buffing Rules are quite simple. These rules are fairly straight-forward as there are not difference in the types of buffs you use. There are no 'priorities' nor are they 'Unique Tier Buffs vs Standard Buffs'. Buffs are buffs. You may only gain these bonuses if you have a Buffing-Type Skill.

Buff Duration
All buffs last 5 rounds maximum before being required to be re-applied -- costing the user the same cooldowns/MP that it would cost to cast it normally. Weapon Arts buffs will have their cooldowns begin once the buff ends.

Buff Limits
  • You can only have 1 Physical Buff and up to 1 Magical Buff active at once. You cannot have 2 Physical Buffs active at a time nor can you have 2 Magical Buffs active at a time -- but you can have 1 of both active at a time.
  • No stat may be buffed over 20. Any buff exceeding 20 will be wasted.

  • Dual-Type Buffs
Dual-Type Buffs (whether it's dual-typed with an offensive type or a healing type action) will be unlocked at Rank 3 Skills. Dual-Typing will reduce the effect of the buff by 1 Rank. So if the Dual-Type buff is a Rank 3 skill, it will only gain the effects of a Rank 2 Buff.

    Magical Buff
These are buffs that originate from Magical Arts from a Magical Arts Skill Library. Magic has the most variety of stats that can be buffed but will have a slightly lower upper limit.
    • Rank 1: +2 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 2: +3 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 3: +4 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 4: +5 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 5: +6 between any stat except CON
The maximum any single stat can be buffed is +3 from a Magical Buff.

    Physical Buff
These are buffs that original from Weapon Arts from a Weapon Arts Skill Library. Physical Buffs originate from within the user and are there to buff either Strength or Dexterity. Those are the only two stats that can be buffed in a Physical Buff.
    • Rank 1: +2 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 2: +3 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 3: +4 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 4: +5 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 5: +6 between STR and DEX
The maximum any single stat can be buffed is +6 from a Physical Buff.

    Maneuver Buff
Maneuver Buffs are buffs that affect the Skill and only the skill. Whether having higher Dexterity lets you move faster for the Skill or swing faster or swing harder. Maneuver Buffs are only possible with Weapon Arts to make up for the lack of flexibility that Weapon Arts has over Magical Arts. These buffs will only last for the duration of the Skill and will not follow with you. Just like Physical Buffs, these may only increase Strength and/or Dexterity and are unlocked at Rank 3.
    • Rank 3: +1 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 4: +2 between STR and DEX
    • Rank 5: +3 between STR and DEX

    Debuffing Rules
Debuffing works the exact same way as Buffing does, but it takes away stats rather than adds stats. Generally used for opponents rather than self or party members. However, unlike Buffs, there are no Maneuver Debuffs.

    Debuff Duration
All debuffs lasts 5 rounds maximum or until cleansed before being required to be re-applied -- costing the user the same cooldowns/MP that it would cost to cast it normally. Weapon Arts debuffs will have their cooldowns begin once the debuff ends.

    Debuff Limits
  • Unlike Buffs, there are no debuff limits. However, a target may not be affected by the same debuff more than once at the same time. If the user wishes to continue to debuff the target's stats, they are required to be affected by different techniques with different effects.
  • Anyone is capable of using a buff (if they have a buff available) to completely overwrite the debuff, making a single debuff useless
  • Depending on the nature of the debuff, the target may be able to cleanse the debuff

  • Dual-Type Debuffs
Dual-Type Debuffs (whether it's dual-typed with an offensive type or other types) will be unlocked at Rank 3 Skills. Dual-Typing will reduce the effect of the debuff by 1 Rank. So if the Dual-Type Debuff is a Rank 3 Skill, it will only gain the effects of a Rank 2 Debuff.

    Magical Debuff
These are buffs that originate from Magical Arts from a Magical Arts Skill Library. Magic has the most variety of stats that can be debuffed but will have a slightly lower upper limit.
    • Rank 1: -1 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 2: -2 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 3: -3 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 4: -4 between any stat except CON
    • Rank 5: -5 between any stat except CON
The maximum any single stat can be debuffed is -3 from a Magical Debuff.

    Physical Debuff
Physical Debuffs follow the exact same rules at Magical Debuffs, however, they occur due to mechanical reasons. The user's Skill must state how and why it debuffs a certain stat. Such as someone with a Hammer Weapon Art bonking someone on the head can reduce the target's INT by -3. That's the only difference between Physical and Magical Debuff -- Magical, you don't have to explain it while Physical you do.
